Alzheimer’s Research UK becomes an affiliate charity of Our Future Health
Our affiliate charities are sharing their expertise in the prevention, early detection and treatment of disease with Our Future Health. By joining forces, the charities are also able to shape the programme to ensure it is fit to serve the research needs of a range of diseases and conditions.
Alzheimer’s Research UK
Alzheimer’s Research UK’s mission is to accelerate progress towards a cure for dementia, by revolutionising the way we treat, diagnose, and prevent the condition. The charity raises awareness of dementia, influences government and policy makers so dementia is at the top of the political agenda, and provides information for people affected by dementia.
Through its work, Alzheimer’s Research UK’s vision is to have a world free from the fear, harm, and heartbreak of dementia.
Dementia
Dementia is a word used to describe a group of symptoms, for example memory loss, confusion and changes in behaviour. Dementia is not something that just happens to everyone as they get older. It is caused by different diseases, and Alzheimer’s is the most common type.
If nothing changes, 1 in 2 people will be devastated by dementia, either as a carer, by developing the condition themselves, or both. Dementia is the leading cause of death in the UK. In 2022, dementia accounted for more than 1 in 10 of all deaths across the country. In total, it claimed more than 74,000 lives, more than lung cancer or stroke.
Around 982,000 people are living with dementia in the UK, with this number predicted to rise to 1.4 million in 2040.
